MANILA, Philippines – Not even a flooded convent could stop the Daughters of Mary, a group of Catholic sisters based in Naga City, from helping their fellow victims of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami).
“Our generalate house in Naga City is flooded, but the sisters there are still able to offer help by providing lugaw (rice porridge),” said Sister Raquel Buhay, a member of the congregation, in a Facebook post on Thursday, October 24.
Buhay shared the following photos of the Daughters of Mary inside their flooded convent on Wednesday, October 23, and their outreach activity on Thursday. Rappler is reposting these with her permission.
The Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church Institute is composed of around 140 members, according to 2019 data in the Claretians’ Catholic directory. Their convent is located along Ateneo Avenue in Naga, one of the country’s most deeply religious cities as it is home to Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
Members of the Daughters of Mary are involved in the catechetical ministry as teachers of the Catholic faith, and are also known for helping families, schools, parishes, and dioceses. They are found “even in far-flung and isolated areas,” their website profile stated.
They are one of the many religious groups that have helped victims of Kristine, which has affected around 2.65 million Filipinos and killed at least 13. – Rappler.com
