MANILA, Philippines – Supporters of former president Rodrigo Duterte have one wish: for him to return to the Philippines.
They argue that the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction over the Philippines since the country is no longer an ICC member-state. But Justice Secretary Boying Remulla earlier said Duterte’s arrest and detention in The Hague is already a “done deal,” and that the ICC has jurisdiction over individuals accused of crimes under international humanitarian law.
Duterte marked his 80th birthday at the ICC’s Detention Center at The Hague on Friday, March 28, over two weeks since he was arrested on March 11. Meanwhile, his supporters staged prayer rallies in different parts of the Philippines and in other countries. – Rappler.com
