Manila, Philippines – Nicholas Kaufman will be former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s lead counsel for his crimes against humanity case at the International Criminal Court (ICC), Vice President Sara Duterte said.
Based on the roll of counsel registered with the ICC, Kaufman is British and Israeli.
Kaufman was also the legal counsel of former Central African Republic’s militia leader Maxime Jeoffroy Eli Mokom Gawaka, who also faced the ICC. He also served as lawyer of Aisha Gaddafi, daughter of Libya’s Muammar, who also faced the ICC.
Aside from Kaufman, former executive secretary Salvador Medialdea and former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque are also part of the former president’s legal team.
Kaufman earned his law degree from the University of Cambridge in 1989.
He also served as a prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and at the International Criminal Court, Kaufman’s LinkedIn profile showed.
Duterte faced the ICC for the first time on Friday, March 14. He is expected to face the court again on September 23 for the confirmation of charges hearing. – Rappler.com
