Elon Musk’s X blocking links to Signal messaging app

MANILA, Philippines – Social media service X is apparently blocking links to the Signal messaging application, following reports of failed attempts to add signal.me links on X posts.

The issue, which was first reported by Matt Binder, presents different platform-related error messages when attempting to post a signal.me link through public posts, direct messages, or as a link on a user’s profile page.

X is also blocking existing signal.me links made prior to the block.

The Signal messaging app is notable for being a tool used by journalists and whistleblowers to communicate since messages are end-to-end encrypted and stored on the device itself.

The Verge, in its report, added that while this is not the first time X has blocked links from other services — most notably links to Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon and other social media platforms in 2022 and Substack links in 2023 — Signal is not a direct competitor to X.

The Verge said that at the time of its report, Signal user handles could also still be posted on X and users could work around the issue by copy-pasting the link into Signal. – Rappler.com
