MANILA, Philippines – The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), the biggest climate summit of the year, has been criticized for being held in an authoritarian country with a fossil fuel legacy.

A recent investigation from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) showed that the summit’s official corporate partners are linked to Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev’s family and inner circle.

Rappler environment reporter Iya Gozum talks to OCCRP journalist Ilya Lozovsky on how the corporate links to Azerbaijan’s ruling clan can affect the integrity of the summit and how hosting COP29 can encourage a positive international image.
