When the music started at XYLO at The Palace on the night of October 19, something magical happened.
For a few hours, the dance floor transformed into a place where everyone expressed themselves freely. Everyone was officially welcomed to the Best Buddies Philippines (BBP) Dance Night: One More Time. But the event isn’t about dancing, it’s about building confidence and creating a safe space for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
At the heart of these dance nights is a mission that goes beyond fundraising. Best Buddies Philippines (BBP) is committed to creating safe and inclusive environments where those with IDD feel celebrated.
Confidence and connection
Opportunities to engage in social settings can be limited for people with IDD. That’s where BBP steps in, ensuring that their Dance Nights are more than just a fun event but a safe haven.
With every song played and beat dropped, the attendees built self-confidence, made memories with their friends, and enjoyed an environment that celebrates exactly who they are.
“One word to describe the Best Buddies Philippines One More Time Dance Night is inclusive,” shared BBP president and executive director, Michelle Aventajado. “It’s true inclusivity when a space prepares for everyone to be counted in a safe manner, which we can say Xylo did here from accessible ramps for our wheelchair users, training all of their staff, and making sure that everybody is ready and welcoming.”
One of the most heartwarming aspects of these nights was also the excitement from the buddies themselves. Best Buddies member and Rappler correspondent for the night, Helena Prudenciado, was giddy not just with her first hosting on-camera, but for the chance to dance the night away with her friends simply.
